Materials Needed:

  • Crochet yarn: Green and the color of your choice for the blossom.
  • Crochet hook: Suitable size for the yarn.
  • Floral wire: Silver or gold with a diameter of 0.35 mm.
  • Stem wire: Green with a diameter of 0.8 mm.
  • Aluminum wire: Green with a diameter of 3 mm.
  • Floral tape: Green, 12 mm wide.
  • 5 stamens per flower in yellow.
  • Yarn needle, scissors, wire cutters, flat-nose pliers, fiberfill, hot glue.

Instructions for a Gladiolus Blossom

Two blossoms will be crocheted.

Small Petal (Make 3)

Crochet in rows with sc, starting each row with a turning ch.

  1. With the chosen blossom color, chain 1 and make 1 turning chain.
  2. Row 1: 2 sc in the initial chain. (2)
  3. Row 2: Increase in each sc. (4)
  4. Row 3: Increase in the first and last st. (6)
  5. Rows 4-10: 6 sc in each row. (6)
  6. Row 11: Decrease in the first and last 2 sts. (4)
  7. Row 12: Decrease in every st. (2)
  8. Row 13: 2 sc. (2)

Place a 20 cm piece of silver or gold floral wire along the outer edge. Crochet around the petal with sc, incorporating the wire. Crochet 3 sc at the tip.

(Optional: Crochet the starting tail with the wire to secure both ends. This saves weaving in ends.)

Twist the wire ends together. Trim to 5 cm.

Large Petal (Make 3)

Crochet in rows with sc, starting each row with a turning ch.

  1. With the chosen blossom color, chain 1 and make 1 turning chain.
  2. Row 1: 3 sc in the initial chain. (3)
  3. Row 2: Increase in the first and last st. (5)
  4. Row 3: Increase in the first and last st. (7)
  5. Row 4: Increase in the first and last st. (9)
  6. Rows 5-11: 9 sc in each row. (9)

  8. Row 13: Decrease in the first and last 2 sts. (5)
  9. Row 14: Decrease in the first and last 2 sts. (3)
  10. Row 15: 3 sc. (3)
  11. Row 16: Decrease all 3 sc together. (1)

Place a 30 cm piece of silver or gold floral wire along the outer edge. Crochet around the petal with sc, incorporating the wire. Crochet 3 sc at the tip.

Sepal (Make 3)

Assembling the Gladiolus Blossom

Form a ring with the 3 small petals and twist the wire ends together. Arrange the 3 large petals around the small petals, alternating the positions, and twist all wire ends together. (Using flat-nose pliers can help.)

Wrap the wire ends with floral tape.

In the center of the flower, attach 5 stamens with a drop of hot glue.

  4. Rows 3-6: 5 sc in each row. (5)

  4. Row 5: Increase in each sc. (4)
  5. Rows 6-15: 4 sc in each row. (4)
  6. Row 16: Decrease in every st. (2)

Place a 45 cm piece of green or gold floral wire along the outer edge. Crochet around the leaf with sc, incorporating the wire. Crochet 3 sc at the tip.

Twist the wire ends together. Trim to 5 cm.

Top Green Bud

Crochet the bud in rounds with sc. Close each round with a sl st.

  1. With green yarn, chain 2.
  2. Round 1: 4 sc in the second chain from the hook, join with sl st. (4)
  3. Round 2: Increase in each sc. (8)
  4. Round 3: 8 sc. (8)
  5. Round 4: Increase in every 2nd sc. (12)
  6. Rounds 5-13: 12 sc in each round. (12)
  7. Round 14: Decrease in every st. (6)

Finish and cut the yarn, leaving a 10 cm tail.

Final Assembly

Fill the bud with fiberfill until it feels firm.

Insert a stem wire into the bud. Close the bottom of the bud with the tail yarn.

Strengthen the stem wire with a matching length of aluminum wire and wrap both together tightly with floral tape starting from the bud.

Starting from the top, attach the slightly opened buds and green leaves in your preferred order, followed by the fully opened flowers, wrapping each wire end tightly with floral tape
